Las Vegas Bookies 7-9 pm Tuesday, February 16, 2016 will discuss Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid by President Jimmy Carter. Moderator: Lucy Rey. Host: Louise Kulosa. Contact: Louise Kulosa firstname.lastname@example.org
President Carter’s 2006 best-seller is a challenging, provocative, and courageous work. It offers an assessment of what must be done to bring permanent peace to Israel, with dignity and justice to Palestine. He says there will be no peace until Israel abides by key U.N. resolutions and official, if ignored, American policy. This would entail Israel’s halt to occupying Arab lands and oppressing Palestinians, and would result in an end to terrorism.
In using the word “apartheid” in the title of his book, President Carter generated a passionate response among many Israelis and the Anti-Defamation League, but accomplished his objective of broadening the conversation about Palestine to include a greater appreciation of the hardships of the Palestinians. Critics say President Carter’s perspective is too narrow, failing to take into account the role of Al Qaeda and other religious fundamentalists, both Jewish and Muslim, in the ongoing turmoil in the region.
