Welcome to UUCLV’s Religious Forums, This is an ongoing time for a friendly forum to discuss religions in a friendly respectful not threatening surrounding.

We will kickoff the season with our first Religious Forum on Sunday November 20th from 12-2.

The first forum to be held is focused on Humanism. Our congregation has a long history of sharing lectures from a Humanist position.

We will view/hear a lecture together then engage in a managed discussion about Humanism then other religions over time. We will offer forums on Theism, Paganism, African Traditional Religions (ATR) and Native American religions this year.

Join us for a lively and engaging time as we learn, grow and provide more grist for the mill of building ones own theology.

Calling all poets and poetry lovers! This Sunday our service is all about poetry and we want to hear from you. Please message me or comment if you would like to share your poetry or your favorite poem. We can have someone read your poem if you would prefer. All ages are encouraged to participate.

Let It Shine: Ancestors

Let it Shine is back! Our first session this Fall will be led by Heidi Winder and Rosary Fitzgerald.

Come learn about ancestors and how different cultures have connected to theirs. You are invited to bring a *copy* of an ancestor (genetic or spiritual ancestor) photo to contribute to our UU Family Tree which will be on display at the church for a few months.

Also consider bringing the ancestor's favorite food or drink, or a representation of, to invite their spirits in. There will also be read-alouds and songs. Come learn about ancestors together with us!
Let it Shine is free, and people of all ages are welcome.

The Threads of life have been woven; we have met our challenges with courage. Now is time for reaping...

The fields are bare, the leaves have fallen from the trees, and the skies are going gray and cold. It is the time of year when the earth has died and gone dormant. Every year on October 31, the Sabbat we call Samhain presents us with the opportunity to once more celebrate the cycle of death and rebirth.
Tonight we Seek the Moirai. Calling upon each of the Fates; reflecting on our journey as we pass from this year, and step anew onto the path of the year ahead.

This Samhain we invite you to share sacred time and space with us in person! This will be a hybrid event, with online access for all our dear friends who are with us from afar. Come - be part of the magic!

Doors will open at 7:30 pm
Ritual at 8:00 pm

Potluck to immediately follow, please bring a dish to share and get to know our fantastic Goddess Community!

We started down a path of Multifaith understanding last month. This service continues our journey. Building upon the goal of a world where each of us is respected and our inherent worth and dignity is honored, I'd like us to start with the spirituality of first nations, tribal peoples from across the globe. Let's spend some time considering how those early ancestors paved the way for so many interpretations of religion and spiritual expression. Let's make sure our UU home is both open and engaged with faith in a multifaith way! Join us as we open the pathway to more understanding.

     Join us at UUCLV as we lift up The Dream, encourage a renewed interest in creating The Beloved Community and dear I say deepen our connections to the eighth principle that we adopted (8th principle). The issues in Los Angeles caught my eyes and ears this week; how about you?
     The service and sermon will in some ways continue my theme this month about dreaming. It also connects us to our association's historic legacy. Many UU’s have been abolitionist, suffragettes, pacifist, ecologist, LGBTQIA activist and so much more as we’ve grappled with the linked oppressions that plague human relationships.
     Let’s come together and let us find a pathway to greater activity, understanding, compassion and love.

WHAT IS BELOVED COMMUNITY?
     Beloved Community happens when people of diverse racial, ethnic, educational, class, gender, abilities, sexual orientation backgrounds/identities come together in an interdependent relationship of love, mutual respect, and care that seeks to realize justice within the community and in the broader world.

WHY SINGLE OUT RACISM?
     At a global level, this would not necessarily make sense (for instance, the oppression of women is fundamental to poverty and lack of development in many areas), but in the USA, racism stands out. The two worst crises of the UUA (late 1960’s and now) were both related to race. Racism in the US stems from chattel slavery, where people were uniquely legally treated as property that could be inherited, for something (skin color) they had no control over.
     The UUA has done well with women becoming ministers and leaders (the 7 Principles themselves came out of the Women’s Movement within UUism).
     The LGBTQIA+ community is well represented as members, ministers, RE staff, and other leadership in individual congregations and the UUA, and the Welcoming Congregation program has been very effective (we could use something similar for racism). Some congregations have done a good job of making sure they are accessible to people with disabilities, although many UU spaces are still not fully accessible.
     The UUA, the US, and the world also have a lot of problems deeply based in economic class oppression (as MLK realized, in addition to militarism and materialism); this Principle includes that, but is not highlighting it.

WHY THE UUA (USA)?
     Whiteness, and chattel slavery (structural racism) were invented in the US, at the same time that modern Unitarianism and Universalism were being created.
     Unitarians originally were largely from the New England European-American elite – often did not treat Native American peoples well, benefitted from slavery, and some were leaders in the Eugenics movement (promoting birth control for people of color because they were seen as inferior).
    Some Unitarian and Universalist ministers (more Universalists, since Universalism was more of a working class movement) spoke out against slavery, but we did little as a denomination. After the Trayvon Martin verdict, many UU ministers said nothing in church.
     UU’s did a very good job during the Civil Rights Movement, largely at the request of Dr. King, and we should be very proud of that.
    In the late 60’s a promising movement (BAC, BUUC) was supported by the UUA, then de-funded because of a financial crisis, leading to a terrible conflict, after which many African-Americans left the UUA.
     There was a long period of silence until the late 80’s and early 90’s, then excellent progress after that for a decade or so, but we have regressed, leading to the UUA President resigning over hiring inclusivity issues.
     The LA problem, The LV problem, The NY problem, The USA problem, The global problem…

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE ACCOUNTABLE?
     White UUs hold themselves accountable to communities of color, to make sure whites do what they say they will do. In practice, that can mean having a People of Color Caucus within congregations, districts, etc., to discern and express needs and concerns to the rest of the community. Black UUs hold each other accountable and help each other see and dismantle signs of internalized racism. We need an effective mechanism or structure to ensure this. Similarly for other oppressions.

How do we at UUCLV change the present realities?
     Education
     Engagement
     Relationship building
     Shared responsibilities
     Changing the world!

In the beginning, when you’re making plans to live out your dream, it’s exciting and easy to be enthusiastic about the process. But those emotions can’t be the driving force of your determination because they will subside over time. Given that typical reality, how do we at UUCLV hold fast to our dreams for ourselves individually and live into our collective dream as a congregation. Covenant, Vision, Mission, Welcoming Congregation, our UUA Principles and Purposes call us into intentional living.

In honor of National Coming Out Day (October 11), in remembrance of all of the people who dared to be different from what society deemed their place, with love for those willing to live life on their terms, let's dream possible dreams! Let's live into our collective dreams here in the Vegas Valley. Let's dream! We can do this. Join the journey!
