Wow!!!
Look at what we did!!!
It was a late winter's eve when I was going through my emails and I came across one from UU the Vote. They are the people who are a non-partisan program of the UUA who articulate UU values in the public square. Being that the 5th principle and 2nd source are my favorite, I stepped up last year to participate so that their message is amplified at UUCLV. But I digress.
Look at what we did!!!

The email I saw had the subject line 'Join Congressman Adam Schiff this weekend for Jan 6th Day of Remembrance and Action' Hmm, that sounds intriguing. So I opened it and found out that they were organizing a nationwide event on January 6 to remember the events on that day last year and take action. It also had a link to the national organizers. I checked the link to see what was being held in Las Vegas. I found that there weren't any in-person events. So, seeing an opportunity for us to be a part of the community and advertise the church, I forwarded the email off the social justice group and Nancy to see if there was any desire to participate. Oh, there was! So I signed us up to hold an event.
What am I getting myself into? I thought. I've never organized an event like this. It's two holidays and less than three weeks away! Thanks to the national organizers and many at the church, it was not that hard. With some phone calls and emails, we were able to get it out to many other organizations and issue some press releases.
That night we did get some press coverage (two cameras and a newspaper reporter) Also, at least 20 people from the community who were not members showed up. Even a few children from next door were there on the fence wall watching and listening. By the way, they know we are a church. Larry and I had a conversation with them when we were filling the bags for the luminaria. They asked us what we were doing and was it for the church. I wonder if they thought we were up to some trouble digging in the back lot. At the event, in total, 50 folks showed up!
The call to action was to call your senator and tell then to pass the Freedom to Vote Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, the Protecting our Democracy Act and DC Statehood act. Both of our senators support these bills, but they need to hear from you. Call them and thank them for their support of these important laws that will protect our fragile democracy. They need to what you think.
Finally, thank you to all who came that night, stepped up and helped out. It was one of the most rewarding experiences I have had living my UU values.
If you want to make change, vote. It not only matters but counts.

Vigil for Democracy January 6 at UUCLV

January 6 was a violent and deadly attack against all Americans – against our country, our democracy, and our freedom as voters to choose the leaders that represent us so that we have a government of, by, and for the people.
One year later, the same faction that attacked our country on January 6th is hard at work silencing our voices by restricting our freedom to vote, attacking fair voting districts, and quietly preparing future attempts to sabotage free and fair elections and with it our democracy.
So this January 6, exactly one year later, Americans across race, place, party, and background are holding candlelight vigils to say: In America, the voters decide the outcome of elections.
The promise of democracy is not a partisan issue but a calling that unites us as Americans. To prevent this kind of attack from happening again, our elected leaders must pass urgent legislation that will protect this country from anti-democratic forces who are continuing their efforts to destroy it.
Coming together, we can prevent another January 6th attack and realize the promise of democracy for all of us - no matter our color, zip code, or income - so we all have an equal say in the decisions that shape our daily lives and futures.
Please join us in solidarity at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Las Vegas as we hold vigil to side with Love and will not forget.
