Nancy and I spent HOURS playing 5-Crowns, Rummikub and Pinochle this summer. What we liked about Rummikub and 5-Crowns is that young people can easily play also. Other years we have been enamored with Blokus, Monopoly and Sorry. You can see the games we have - if you have a FAVORITE - let us know and you can bring it. January 14th - Saturday at 1 - 5 pm in the UUCLV Social Hall Suggested Donation $10.00 for individual $20.00 per family. Bring your own snacks & drinks. THERE WILL BE DOOR PRIZES! It was a late winter's eve when I was going through my emails and I came across one from UU the Vote. They are the people who are a non-partisan program of the UUA who articulate UU values in the public square. Being that the 5th principle and 2nd source are my favorite, I stepped up last year to participate so that their message is amplified at UUCLV. But I digress. The email I saw had the subject line 'Join Congressman Adam Schiff this weekend for Jan 6th Day of Remembrance and Action' Hmm, that sounds intriguing. So I opened it and found out that they were organizing a nationwide event on January 6 to remember the events on that day last year and take action. It also had a link to the national organizers. I checked the link to see what was being held in Las Vegas. I found that there weren't any in-person events. So, seeing an opportunity for us to be a part of the community and advertise the church, I forwarded the email off the social justice group and Nancy to see if there was any desire to participate. Oh, there was! So I signed us up to hold an event. What am I getting myself into? I thought. I've never organized an event like this. It's two holidays and less than three weeks away! Thanks to the national organizers and many at the church, it was not that hard. With some phone calls and emails, we were able to get it out to many other organizations and issue some press releases. That night we did get some press coverage (two cameras and a newspaper reporter) Also, at least 20 people from the community who were not members showed up. Even a few children from next door were there on the fence wall watching and listening. By the way, they know we are a church. Larry and I had a conversation with them when we were filling the bags for the luminaria. They asked us what we were doing and was it for the church. I wonder if they thought we were up to some trouble digging in the back lot. At the event, in total, 50 folks showed up! The call to action was to call your senator and tell then to pass the Freedom to Vote Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, the Protecting our Democracy Act and DC Statehood act. Both of our senators support these bills, but they need to hear from you. Call them and thank them for their support of these important laws that will protect our fragile democracy. They need to what you think. Finally, thank you to all who came that night, stepped up and helped out. It was one of the most rewarding experiences I have had living my UU values. If you want to make change, vote. It not only matters but counts. We will discuss what UUCLV is already doing, what we have done in the past, and our aspirations for future actions. We will discuss having a measured strategy and letting it be informed by our mission and vision. Also, we will consider utilizing a multiple person leadership team (co-chairs, a council of leaders, rotating leadership, etc.) in an effort to manage and build capacity. Please reach out to Reverend Bailey for more information about attending these meetings. minister@uuclv.org We will be meeting regularly once a month, with occasional Saturday morning working meetings with regular updates delivered in the Friday Flashes from the Beacon and from the pulpit on Sunday mornings. If you would like to be a part of planning the Social Justice direction UUCLV is taking, please let Rev. Gordon or Lisa know. Please check our CALENDAR for meeting dates and times. | UPCOMING SOCIAL JUSTICE EVENTS |
