It was a late winter's eve when I was going through my emails and I came across one from UU the Vote. They are the people who are a non-partisan program of the UUA who articulate UU values in the public square. Being that the 5th principle and 2nd source are my favorite, I stepped up last year to participate so that their message is amplified at UUCLV. But I digress. The email I saw had the subject line 'Join Congressman Adam Schiff this weekend for Jan 6th Day of Remembrance and Action' Hmm, that sounds intriguing. So I opened it and found out that they were organizing a nationwide event on January 6 to remember the events on that day last year and take action. It also had a link to the national organizers. I checked the link to see what was being held in Las Vegas. I found that there weren't any in-person events. So, seeing an opportunity for us to be a part of the community and advertise the church, I forwarded the email off the social justice group and Nancy to see if there was any desire to participate. Oh, there was! So I signed us up to hold an event. What am I getting myself into? I thought. I've never organized an event like this. It's two holidays and less than three weeks away! Thanks to the national organizers and many at the church, it was not that hard. With some phone calls and emails, we were able to get it out to many other organizations and issue some press releases. That night we did get some press coverage (two cameras and a newspaper reporter) Also, at least 20 people from the community who were not members showed up. Even a few children from next door were there on the fence wall watching and listening. By the way, they know we are a church. Larry and I had a conversation with them when we were filling the bags for the luminaria. They asked us what we were doing and was it for the church. I wonder if they thought we were up to some trouble digging in the back lot. At the event, in total, 50 folks showed up! The call to action was to call your senator and tell then to pass the Freedom to Vote Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, the Protecting our Democracy Act and DC Statehood act. Both of our senators support these bills, but they need to hear from you. Call them and thank them for their support of these important laws that will protect our fragile democracy. They need to what you think. Finally, thank you to all who came that night, stepped up and helped out. It was one of the most rewarding experiences I have had living my UU values. If you want to make change, vote. It not only matters but counts. The Unitarian Universalist |
In his younger years, working with youth and adults at Catholic Charities, Job Corps, and the New York City Public School System inspired Reverend Gordon to continue as a community advocate. Recognizing that ministry is his true calling, he completed a Master's of Divinity at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington D.C.—focusing on Urban Ministry and Pastoral Counseling.
At that time, Reverend Gordon forged a deep and long-standing connection to Unitarian Universalism with the U.U. Congregation in D.C. This background—along with his twenty-six years as a UU minister—has prepared him well to serve the multi-faceted needs of the UUCLV community—in Las Vegas, a city with international dynamics that rival those of his birthplace, New York City! The excitement the Reverend brings to UUCLV matches our members' eager anticipation of his installation and ongoing leadership as Minister. We also welcome the Reverend's spouse, Lisa Bailey, who is a fierce social justice advocate.
There will be a virtual installation ceremony via Zoom on Nov. 14th at 1:00 p.m., followed by an in-person reception outdoors at UUCLV at 3:00 p.m.
For the link to attend the Installation on Zoom or RSVP to the in-person reception, email our office staff at [email protected].
UUCLV will be following the National UU Association and CDC-recommended guidelines for COVID restrictions for the in-person event.
We ask that only fully-vaccinated people attend the reception—and wear a mask in the building or when coming in close contact with others.
We look forward to seeing you there!
